Meet the Musicians
Jon Pearce
Saxophones and EWI
Jon has always been passionate about both music and design. His musical journey began with the piano, but everything changed at the age of 10 when he discovered the saxophone and he hasn’t been able to put it down since.
As a young musician, Jon honed his skills with the Corsham Windband Association, progressing from the training band to the youth concert band, where he eventually became the lead alto saxophonist. It was during these formative years that he developed his signature powerful tone and a love for playing solos.
By the age of 16, Jon had achieved Grade 8 in classical saxophone and began exploring the world of big band jazz. He joined the Just in Time Big Band in Bath (which later evolved into the Park Lane Big Band).
While studying graphic design in Falmouth, Cornwall, Jon immersed himself further in jazz, collecting records and delving into various styles. He was particularly inspired by the soulful sounds of Stanley Turrentine and Cannonball Adderley and then much later the atmospheric works of Kyle Eastwood and Matthew Halsall.
After graduating, Jon balanced a career as a graphic designer with an active musical life and later being a Dad to two wonderful daughters. He performed with wind bands, big bands, and classical saxophone groups, including The Original Sax Quartet, playing everything from weddings to recitals. Around this time, he also added the soprano saxophone to his repertoire.
In 2012, Jon joined Jazz Factory at the Wiltshire Music Centre, Bradford on Avon to deepen his understanding of jazz and jazz theory, while also leading his own quartet. His band became a regular feature at Whatley Manor, where they performed for several years.
In more recent years, Jon has focussed more on the tenor and soprano saxophone and has been excited to explore the creative possibilities of the Electronic Wind Instrument (Aerophone).
David Kempson
Keyboard/Piano
Dave started his musical journey as a young child, fighting for the piano seat with his elder brother and jazz-loving father. Briefly interrupted by a 35 year career in medicine, he is now able to devote himself to music full-time. Currently playing regularly in jam sessions and with bands in the Stroud area, Dave is now looking forward to exploring new musical opportunities , finally with his own seat at the piano.
Matt Hughes
Bass
Felix Byrne
Drums
Self taught, Felix has been drumming since he was at school. Along with the guitar, bass and piano, percussion has weaved in and out of his musical endeavours over the years. He trained as a product designer, and currently designs and builds guitars, drawing on his interest in engineering, innovation and sustainability. JPQ is his latest adventure in drumming. A thoroughly enjoyable challenge with a group of fine musicians.
